Earthquake Preparedness Guide for California

Practical steps for earthquake readiness and response

Preparation Foundation

California's earthquake risk demands proactive preparation. The USGS recommends implementation of SeismicSafety.org resources and community preparedness programs. Preparation involves securing your home, assembling emergency supplies, establishing communication plans, and learning earthquake response techniques.

Home Reinforcement

Anchor heavy furniture (bookcases, cabinets, water heaters) to wall studs to prevent toppling. Secure televisions and artwork. Flexible hoses for gas connections prevent rupture. Foundation bolting and soft-story reinforcement provide structural enhancement for older homes built before modern seismic codes (pre-1980s construction).

Emergency Supplies

Prepare at-home kits including water (1 gallon per person daily for 2 weeks), non-perishable food, first aid supplies, medications, flashlights, batteries, portable radios, and cash. Workplace kits should include comfortable shoes, water, and medications. Personal-use kits should be portable for carrying during evacuation.

Communication Plan

Establish an out-of-state contact person (distant phone calls may succeed when local networks are overwhelmed). Share this contact with family members. Register for emergency alerts through your county's emergency system.

Response Techniques

"Drop, Cover, and Hold On" is the recommended response: drop to hands and knees, take cover under a desk or table if available, and hold on until shaking stops. Do NOT run outside during shaking (falling debris poses hazard). Do NOT use elevators immediately after earthquakes.
